🏆Success is in the ordinary things · The Bunker #99

Hi friend 👋🏻!

Welcome to The Bunker.

A Newsletter in which we talk about UX Design and the Freelance Journey, dedicated to those who are starting out in both worlds and who feel identified.

From The Bunker, we accompany you on the way.

One of the things that took me the longest to understand is that success doesn't come from doing extraordinary things.

Rather, it comes from doing ordinary things for an extraordinary amount of time.

And this takes a lot of pressure off, because when you're not achieving success (yet)... it's not because you're not smart enough, but because you haven't been doing it long enough.

This realization marked a turning point in my career as a designer, so I hope that after watching this video, you gain a new perspective that I hope brings you some hope.

Before we start the post, I want to thank Wix Studio for sponsoring it.

Thank you for being the first brand to truly value my work.

I've been creating content and working as a designer for 12 years, and I'm not even 10% of the way to where I should be.

But even so, the other day I received an email from someone at Wix saying: Give us your address, we want to send you a surprise.

And yes, they gifted me a 4K webcam worth €300, the Opal C1. Without asking for anything in return, and that's why they are sponsoring today's video: I'm dedicating a space to them on a topic that I find super special.

And I find it incredible because I'm not a Wix content creator, nor do I have any relationship with them.

But I guess they've been following me for a while and decided to reward me for the work I do, even though I have no relationship with them.

So, thank you. Truly.

We were talking about doing ordinary things for an extraordinary amount of time.

And this is something so simple, that you can ask successful people: What things did you do back then that you no longer do? And they might say:

Well, over time I've learned that it's better to do things differently, but overall, I'm still doing the same things.

And that's the key, to keep doing the same things.

Because people go to the gym for one month, and when they don't see results, they stop going.

When in reality, results come very gradually. Sometimes so gradually that on a day-to-day basis, you're unable to notice the difference.

But when you explain it to someone or look back, you realize: It's true, there has been progress.

There's a phrase that really impacted me: Without commitment, there will never be a beginning, but without consistency, there will never be an end, you'll never finish.

And this is true: A good example is trying to grow an audience on any social platform.

Starting is relatively easy, but growing exponentially is super difficult, and since you don't see results, you end up quitting.

After a month, you come back and ask yourself: Was it because I didn't stick with it long enough?

So what do you do? You start again.

And you go through the same cycle, this time you give it two months, you don't see results, and you quit again.

A year later, you try again.

How easy it would have been if you had stayed consistent the first time, maybe by now, you'd have achieved much more.

This comes from all the pressure society puts on us: You have to do this, or you're wasting your time.

If you don't have enough followers, you're a failure, or you're not successful.

Also, in the startup world, they always tell you: As soon as something doesn't work, change it and move fast. Adapt or die. Move quickly.

But few people truly value patience and consistency.

Why is there so much respect for those who are physically strong? Because behind that physical appearance, there's incredible, consistent, and intense work, which is quickly reflected: You look strong.

But what about in areas where the results aren't visible physically? It's harder, because when your family asks: How are your projects going? It's difficult to say: Great, I've been at it for three years and still have nothing to show.

Some might tell you: Well, why don't you quit?

When in reality, they should say: Wow, man, what consistency you have, still at it even with no results?

It's impossible for things not to work out over time, because by being so consistent, you'll become an absolute master in that field, and with your expertise, you'll find a way to make it work.

All you need is time, that's all.

And this is precisely what I would have liked to hear from the beginning. It seems so simple, but there are so many people feeling overwhelmed by not advancing or not seeing results.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

Until next time,

Jordi Espinosa.
