Let me make a grandparent-like comment: Social media degrades your creativity.

This reminds me of when my mother used to say, "You spend too many hours in front of the screen" (maybe she thought I was playing all day, when probably 90% of the day I was working on my projects or other things).

(but I have played a lot in my life, so she wasn't entirely wrong either)

Well, let's not digress.

Lately, I've noticed that I spend a lot of time on social media, especially on Twitter.

I saw Twitter as a space where I could simply meet other people and draw inspiration from other designs, like Dribbble, Behance, and others.

In fact, one of the things I do most on Twitter is save tweets, designs, and more.

The problem is that when you spend so much time on Twitter, there are two things:

First, the time you dedicate to Twitter could be time you could spend doing other things - like designing, for example.

On the other hand, and I think this is where the big problem lies → Fitting in with the rest.

In the end, Twitter is a social network where we measure the success of things based on views and likes. This means that if you make a design and:

It doesn't have views
It doesn't have likes

It's automatically considered garbage and that design is worthless, when maybe it was a good design, but it just didn't attract enough attention on Twitter.

Does this mean it's a bad design? Does this mean you're a bad designer? Absolutely not! → It just means it didn't catch people's attention on Twitter.

Just because it doesn't work on Twitter doesn't mean your design isn't good. I know countless creators who are truly good but don't get likes on Twitter.

After all, Twitter, like Instagram and other social networks, is where people go to get their dopamine fix, and sometimes they prefer a button with a thousand effects that looks super clean and cool, rather than an entire design of a new web project and branding that you've done.

So understanding this is super important.

On the other hand, Twitter is not reality either. In the end, you only see what people post but you don't see the most important thing, all the creative process behind each design.

And this is a problem because in the end we let ourselves be influenced by people's lifestyles and designs, and we start comparing ourselves and idolizing others, but you don't know the headaches that designer you idolize might have had in their creative process.

It's very important to spend just the right amount of time on Twitter, especially following the right people, muting and unfollowing those who no longer contribute enough value to what you would expect, saving everything that will be useful to us, and above all, knowing how to disconnect and practice a lot.

Social media for inspiration is fine, but don't saturate yourselves with what others share or think about your designs.

Just because something is shared a lot doesn't mean it's good; in fact, it's usually the opposite because people tend to follow trends rather than quality design.

Don't let the tool determine your designs, and don't be influenced so much by what others share, because it's not always reality.
