🦎 How to Become the Person you Always Wanted to Be · The Bunker #86
Hi friend 👋🏻!
Welcome to The Bunker.
A Newsletter in which we talk about UX Design and the Freelance Journey, dedicated to those who are starting out in both worlds and who feel identified.
From The Bunker, we accompany you on the way.
Hello! How are you?
As I was telling you in the previous episode, I've been reading the book Atomic Habits for a few days now, and as you can imagine, it's been a game changer for me.
The reality is that: simple and typical productivity hacks aren't enough if you truly want a change in your life.
So, since watching a thousand videos, reading hundreds of articles, and generally being interested in the subject wasn't going to be enough, I decided to read this book by the productivity guru.
And well, it's true that most of the things are things I've already heard at some point in my life, on the other hand, there have been things that have radically changed the way I think.
The book mentions something very important, and this is probably the best concept I've ever heard in my life:
We have to transform:
-
From → Where I want to get or what kind of goals I want to achieve
-
To → What kind of person I have to become to reach that point.
Practical example:
-
From → I want to lose 50 kilos of weight and get in shape.
-
To → I have to become an athlete who prioritizes their health.
Transitioning from the goal → to the change or transformation of personality makes me have to think long term.
It's not so much about what I have to achieve and when I achieve it, it's done. But about adapting a new identity, embracing a new reality.
It's not about reaching the goal and that's it, but inventing systems that make me transform into an athlete and therefore, reach the goal and most importantly → Stay that way and even improve after reaching the goal.
The goal is to arrive, and to arrive I have to be consistent and faithful to the process.
When you are faithful to the process for 5 years, it's very difficult that when you reach the goal you say "I've reached it, I'm not exercising anymore".
The thing is that exercising consistently for 5 years has made you have to make exercise part of your life to maintain that consistency. And once it's part of your life
it's part of your personality, it's no longer something you have to do, it's something about you, it's like who you are now.
That's why giving up bad habits is super difficult, because smoking is already part of your personality. Having a cigarette is already a routine for you, you're a smoker.
Going from being a smoker to a non-smoker doesn't just mean quitting smoking, it implies making a radical change in your identity, in who you are.
A very good example they give in the book is: Someone approaches you and says "do you want a cigarette?" You have 2 options:
1. "No thanks, I'm trying to quit smoking."
2. "No thanks, I'm not a smoker."
In the second option, you are transforming your identity: I AM NOT A SMOKER ANYMORE. When in the first, you're still a smoker but you're trying to quit, there's still something inside you that makes you continue to be a smoker.
And this is what we have to apply to everything we want to achieve in life.
-
I want to reach 100k on YouTube.
-
I have to become a content creator.
Incorporating new identities implies thinking like a content creator, it implies putting yourself in someone's shoes and thinking "what would a content creator do today?" Probably prepare a post, record a video, edit the video.
If I have to become a content creator, there's no room for excuses, I have to become that and I have no choice but to do it.
If you want to charge €3,000 for a website, you have to leave behind the habits and mindset of charging €500. You have to become that new person you want to be.
So, you know, with anything you set out to do, try to think and adopt those new habits, not to achieve a goal, but to transform into the person you want to be.
Cheers, Jordi Espinosa.
