🐟 Wanting something vs taking action · The Bunker #83
Hi friend 👋🏻!
Welcome to The Bunker.
A Newsletter in which we talk about UX Design and the Freelance Journey, dedicated to those who are starting out in both worlds and who feel identified.
From The Bunker, we accompany you on the way.
One of the reasons I decided to create content is because I believe the way I've been achieving things is inspiring to others.
I started very young, maybe around 11-12 years old, but it wasn't until now in 2023-2024 that I'm starting to prioritize correctly. In other words, it's only now that I'm doing things that truly matter to me and are leading me towards success, or at least I'm seeing a return on everything I do.
The return I have now is low, but before it was 0.
I worked hard (just like now), but the result was always the same → 0. And now it's much more (between $500-$3,500 per month, depending on the month).
Learning to prioritize correctly
I know this is easier said than done, but let me tell you something.
The first mistake I was making came because I thought that working hard equated to success. Hard work = Success ✅
If I work hard on a university project and skip going out to party to focus on work → my result will be better.
And what was the result of all this → a mediocre or normal grade, and I missed that party.
And of course, there were people who got better results than me and still didn't miss that party.
This means I sacrificed that day for nothing.
Something that has worked very well for me is setting X hours of work per day, for example: 2 hours of intense work. Sometimes when I know I have the whole weekend to do something, I end up using the entire weekend for tasks that could have been done in 30 minutes.
Something I've really learned over the years is that there really is time for everything, and you don't need to sacrifice anything to achieve great things. And especially not sacrificing time with your family.
This is thanks to understanding that things happen in the long term: "I still have plenty of time to do this," or "nothing is really that urgent." This is really a double-edged sword → it can make you fall into passivity and comfort, but it's really the reality.
Wanting something vs. taking action
Something interesting I've learned over time is forcing myself to do things.
The main problem is always that in my head, everything is much bigger than I think, when it couldn't be further from the truth.
While it's true that there are things that may seem big to me, but that's because they are big in reality.
But in most cases, things are much quicker and simpler than I initially imagined.
If something is truly long, I find ways to make it simpler.
For example: I have to start a project for a client that I know will be tedious because it will be very long. Well, I choose a podcast I like and play it in the background, so I enjoy the podcast while doing something tedious.
In most cases, from my experience, what's difficult for me is starting - Once I get going, everything goes well, and I finish much earlier and with better quality than I had previously estimated in my head.
If we apply this to another area, you wouldn't believe how many people stop doing things because in their head everything is much bigger than they think.
The problem is that it bothers or scares me more not to try something that could be super positive for me and miss out on it, than to try it and fail.
I always wanted to have my own project, a store where I could sell my resources, my templates, etc. I always thought it would be too much work and that it would never end.
Four months ago I founded Koala UI. And nowadays, I have everything I dreamed of with this project.
There is still a lot of room for improvement, and over time, bigger things like Koala University and Koala Studio will come, and there are still areas of improvement for Koala UI, but at least I have a very large and established base to work with.
But it took me 8 years to finally take the courage and energy to do it. Koala could have been born 8 years ago.
And sometimes, all we need is a push to make what we always wanted to do a reality.
And many times, we know what we have to do, but we convince ourselves not to do it. If you know you have to do it, give it a chance and do it, you'll see it's not that bad afterwards.
Nothing is ever that bad.
TLDR
Something I would tell my 12-year-old self is that the path I chose is the right one. But you have to learn to prioritize things and evaluate what you're going to work on.
You know perfectly well what truly impacts your business. You know what you need to work on to move a little closer to your goals.
But you always end up choosing those short and more fun tasks, which then result in little progress or something too superficial.
It took me 8 years to take action.
Don't waste time like I did.
Cheers, Jordi Espinosa.
