🎯 The power of having a goal · The Bunker #118
A few years ago, a friend of mine decided to run his first marathon. He had never been a great runner.
In fact, he would get exhausted after just five kilometers. But one day, almost without thinking, he signed up for a forty-two-kilometer race. No turning back.
The interesting thing is that from the moment he set that goal, everything changed.
-
He started waking up earlier.
-
He went for a run even when it rained.
-
He adjusted his diet.
His entire life began to revolve around that single purpose: crossing the finish line.
Before having a goal, every morning was a dilemma.
-
Should I go to the gym or stay in bed?
-
Should I go for a run or leave it for tomorrow?
But now, those questions disappeared. It didn’t matter if he was tired, if it was cold, or if his legs hurt.
The question was no longer whether he would do it, but when he would do it.
And this is something that has fascinated me for years.
Because many times, we think we lack motivation or that we’re inconsistent, when in reality, what we lack is purpose.
The motivation trap
We live in an era where motivation is sold as the key to success. "You just need to motivate yourself," "Do it when you feel inspired," "Find discipline."
But if you look closely, the people who truly achieve things are not the ones who are constantly motivated.
They are the ones with a clear goal who don’t have to question what they need to do every day.
If you struggle with consistency, the problem isn’t your willpower. It’s not that you’re lazy. The problem is that you haven’t defined a goal strong enough to remove the option of not doing it.
Think of a doctor in the emergency room.
They don’t need motivation to treat a patient.
They don’t ask themselves if they feel like it.
They do it because they have a clear purpose: to save lives.
How I found my own purpose
And this is where I want to share something more personal.
For years, I worked as a freelance designer. I liked what I did, but there were days when I struggled to find meaning in my work.
Yes, I had clients. Yes, I was making money.
But every day felt the same, with no clear direction.
I found myself procrastinating, jumping between projects, doubting whether this was really what I wanted to do.
And I thought my problem was a lack of motivation.
Until one day, I decided to create Koala UI (for example).
Suddenly, everything changed.
-
I no longer had to think about whether I felt inspired to work.
-
I no longer had to fight procrastination.
-
I had a clear purpose: to create the best Design System for Figma.
And when you have a purpose that clear, everything else falls into place.
You stop thinking about whether you feel like doing it or not. You just move forward.
Without direction, everything feels heavier
So if you're struggling to stay consistent right now, ask yourself this:
Do I really lack motivation, or do I simply not have a clear goal?
Because when you have a purpose, excuses disappear.
Procrastination becomes irrelevant. Discipline stops feeling like an effort and becomes a natural habit.
And if you’re a freelancer, I know how hard it can be to find that clarity sometimes.
If every day feels like a battle between what you want to do and what you actually do, maybe you don’t need more motivation.
Maybe you just need a purpose.
A clear direction towards anything.
See you next week. But before that, ask yourself: What am I really building?
Make mastery manageable
If you’re serious about improving, you need a system.
-
Something to help you stay on track.
-
To plan your progress.
-
To organize your projects.
-
That’s why I created the Freelancer Notion Bundle.
A system designed to help freelancers stay focused, structured, and efficient.
Just a clear, organized way to grow your skills and your business.

Because becoming great takes time.
But with the right system, it doesn’t have to feel impossible.
Until next time,
Jordi Espinosa.
